This project has been a tough one, i was off to a slow start with ideas and it took me a while to even start emailing companies so cant exactly say that organisation has been my strong point in this one.

the group i was with have been great, everyone pulled together to produce the final outcomes as well as acheiving our own goals which is great.

this has given me a great insite into how industry works and what it allowed me to get a feel for some companies, how they work and what the atmosphere is like there. I really want to work at wither young or creative spark, they seem to have my sort of atmosphere and both studios have a fun tone to them.

if i was to do this project again, i would have definatly taken more time to sort out my personal branding and i would have also aproached more companies with more confidence.

the final product !! sorry about the image quality, i was taking it from my iphone which apaerntly doesnt take HQ photos that well but that aside, this is what a studio will recieve if i were to send this out.

some photos fro production, as you can see it got quite messy with the graphite er i mean iron filings. all joking aside, i used graphite beause of the really cool spray paint effect it left behind so i have mixed graphite in with the filings to get this cool effect for the real thing

ok finlaly, heres some notes from what me,ryan and sian discussed on thursday at Fluid Creative :
sian is currently an intern
fluid are a multi disciplin company who deal with web, motion and social media aswell as marketing
studios are open 9-5

skills can be picked up on the job but its good to go into industry with some knowledge of sofwear and so on

communication is absloutly vital when working with clients, espeialy when trying to communicate ideas

all departments work together on projects to produce a final

the studio is super chilled…. up to deadline day

the studio has many diffrernt personalities which makes it interesting to work with

sians favotrite project was a sports brief project using social media

social media requires alot of research into why people follow specific countries ect

the studio was just frikkin awesome… super chilled with alot of green and grey

Hello Emma,

1. How did you get your foot into the door of your first design job?
After I graduated, I started my own design agency.

2. How long have you worked at RAW?
Since April 2008. 5 years—holy crap.

3. What is your way of coming up with exciting ideas and concepts?
Understand the brief and distil it down. Try to answer the purest brief in an interesting way.

4. In the studio, how are the briefs delegated between the designers?
It depends on workload. Whoever is the most free will often get the new brief (for designers, anyway). Obviously if it’s for a website, our developer will be involved. If it involves copywriting, our copywriter will be pulled in. Sometimes we’ll rearrange workloads if a brief calls for a particular designer.

5. Out of the briefs you have worked on, which is your favourite?
Perhaps the Wolves rebrand. As a football fan it’s a bit of a dream job, and it turned out to be the largest project I’ve tackled to date.

6. What do you look for in a portfolio?
A wealth of great ideas, executed beautifully.

7. On average, roughly how many hours would you work per week?
I’d say around 42 hours per week at Raw, then personal projects will take up about 8-10 hours per week.

8. As a studio, which deals with illustration, motion and print, do the disciplines collaborate on projects often?
We often collaborate with illustrators, photographers and motion artists. There is sometimes crossover where we end up working as art directors, rather than designers.

9. And finally the last question any tips on how to prepare for an interview with a design agency?
- Print your work professionally
- Think about the theatrics of talking through your work
- Have answers for your design decisions in your projects
- Bring physical pieces of work
- Research the agency
- Be enthusiastic about your work
- Be friendly
- Have questions
- Bring biscuits (silly, but it works)

I apologise for the brevity as I don’t have much time but hope it helps.

• Won an open pitch which then led to part time employment whilst still at university and multiple freelance jobs.

• I founded the company 3 years ago.

• I don’t have a method, it is nothing more than coming up with ideas that answer the brief and creating them. If you procrastinate about the idea you won’t hit the deadlines.

• Clients budget, job size, and skills required.

• There are many I enjoy for varying reasons. Calvin Klein European concept stores visual merchandising was the most rewarding just because of the size of the job and tiny time scale, Uniqlo Heat tech window displays and VM for all UK stores and various Playstation events were the best to see. LVMH jobs are in itself very rewarding just from a business point of view. Then there are all the small but highly enjoyable jobs that you can be properly creative with.

• First I look for a working understanding of the basic principles of design such as hierarchies, grid systems, typography, presentation skills, etc. Second is concepts and how are the relevant to the brief set. Third if it looks good. And finally technical understanding not just of their specific design field but also other fields as the variety of work we do is massive and the more a person can contribute the better.

• 7 days a week, far more than 9 to 5.

• I like everyone to work on everything, still utilising the specific skills of the individual but pushing people out of their comfort zone in a way that is enjoyable.

• It depends on the type of company and the position but I would generally advise to be professional and show your personality. Most importantly know your work (try know as much as possible as some people will try and throw you some really specific questions) and do some basic research on the company.

final of my video, there is alot i want to change but because its stop motion, it would be quite difficult to alter but i think it just about gets the message across, i can always work on it over the holidays whilst i look for work. i think the music works well but the imagery could have been choosen better, i think i just got too focused on one idea here.

these are more photos from my stencils im going to use for my animation, again im going to be using a mix of iron and graphite. the iron provide capabilities for animation and the graphite will stick to the spray mount and leave the design behind.

so after a while of faffing about and being genraly disorganised, i have finaly got round to experementing with spraymount and fillings of some description. these are some photos from my experimentation. after showing it to tutors and getting some positive feed back, i decided to experement with graphite first to see if spraymount has the capacity to hold anything other than a sheet of paper. i found it worked quite well, well enough that i want to mix graphite in with iron filings to get this smudged effect so rarther than using just the iron fillings to create the logo, i can use graphite to accentuate it. if its mixed in with the iron, when the magnet is used to move the iron filings, the graphite will be left behind to mudge and revieal the logo

just watched a brilliant vietnamese film named “the rebel” its set in 1922 during the rebelion against the french occupation. its about a agent working for the french who turns and fights for the rebels then there is a love story and so on but some of the choreographed martial arts scenes are just so badass and despite how boring i have made the story seem, its actualy really good, the female lead (Ngo Thanh van) isnt the typical girl who needs saving and can actualy fight whilst the male lead ( Johnny Nguyen) is just a loveable character. any who thought i would just post this on here so i dont forget what this film is …. knowing me i will forget the name when i want to watch it again. check out Clash swell, same 2 leads but even better story

for my self promotion video, i am going to be looking at doing a motion piece using iron filings with a magnet, thought this was pretty cool seeing how the iron filings make an invisible force visible.

i know this advert has been on tv for a while now but ive been pondering over the animator behind it for a while, i though it was by an animator called Pez and with a bit of research found out that it was … what a suprise !! its very remenicent of western spaghetti which is an earlier video by pez…. got quite excited by that haha. if your havent seen any of pez’s work then deffinatly check it out, some great stopmotion animation
